About This Product

Josh's Frogs Tropical BioBedding Bioactive Substrate (10 quarts) is the perfect substrate for your tropical bioactive enclosure. Tropical Biobedding is a unique blend of organic and inorganic ingredients, trace elements, and beneficial fungi that serves to jump start the bioactive environment. Tropical Biobedding helps maintain humidity while providing a substrate your pets can dig and lay eggs in, all while helping to maintain healthy populations of microfauna.

  • Tank stays cleaner due to bioactive cycle
  • Less substrate changes, which is less stressful on your pet
  • Closer to replicating your pet’s natural habitat
  • More attractive than traditional substrates

How to Prep: Mix contents of bag thoroughly. Place a 2.5-3 inch layer of Tropical BioBedding in your enclosure. Add dechlorinated or R/O water until BioBedding sticks together when squeezed, but no water runs out.

Recommended Animals: We do not recommend using BioBedding with Dart Frogs or anything that requires high humidity and low ventilation.

  • Crested Geckos
  • Mourning Geckos
  • Indopacific Tree Geckos
  • Bauer’s Chameleon Geckos
  • Day Geckos
  • Gargoyle Geckos
  • Leachie Geckos
  • Tree Frogs
  • Bumblebee Toads
  • Yellow Spotted Climbing Toads
  • Mantellas
  • Malaysian Horned Frogs
  • Water Dragons
  • Anoles and other tropical lizards
  • Tegus
  • Tropical snakes
  • Plus many other reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates

Recommended Plants: Terrestrial plants can be planted directly into BioBedding. Tropical BioBedding is a great substrate for most tropical plants, but make sure to match your plants’ needs to your pets’ environment!

  • Tropical Plant Kits for Animals

Suitable for Misted Setups: Yes. Tropical BioBedding does not require a drainage layer if used with light or hand misting. For automatic misting setups, use in conjunction with a 2 inch layer of Josh's Frogs False Bottom and a Substrate Barrier

Care: Tropical BioBedding is a naturalistic vivarium substrate and is meant to house a bioactive clean up crew! Stir the surface of the substrate every 1-2 weeks with a fork, or if waste is visible. Burying waste allows microfauna to process it quicker. Change the substrate when it begins to break down - typically after several years. Please note that Tropical Biobedding is designed to grow fungi - this is not a sign of a dirty tank, but of a healthy, clean bioactive environment.

Not sure if this is the right substrate for your pet? Josh's Frogs also offers Coco Select, Dig It, ABG Mix, Coco Cradle, incubation media, feeder insect beddings, various shredded barks like Aspen, Cypress, Pine, and more!

Plenty for a 12x12x18

Reviewed on November 21, 2024.

I used this in a 12x12x18 enclosure and did about 5 inches and still had a good amount leftover that I was able to do some layers in a few bio jumping spider enclosures!

Wonderful substrate

Reviewed on November 7, 2024.

This has been my go-to substrate for my tropical and temperate (upland/lowland forest) frog and toad species for a few years now. Although I usually still provide a drainage layer, I will say that as long as you provide enough depth and microfauna, this substrate can easily stand alone as it already contains drainage layer contents.

Great mix

Reviewed on October 14, 2024.

I didn’t take a photo of the bag, but I did take a picture of it when I put it in the terrarium. It’s a good mix. It’s quite chunky, so it allows plenty of air exchange, however because it is so chunky I found it drying out very fast. I think that may have been the reason why my isopods and springtails died. Since then, I have mixed in a little bit of organic potting soil so it holds moisture a bit better.
