About This Product

Josh's Frogs Substrate Barrier is a vital layer in all successful naturalistic vivaria. Substrate Barrier fits between the false bottom and ABG Mix layers, and ensures that no ABG Mix falls down into the false bottom, disrupting water flow.

If substrate is allowed into the drainage layer it will fill in the empty spaces where water is supposed to collect, which clogs the layer and reduces its effectiveness. It can even reverse the drainage process by wicking water upwards, back into the substrate above. Oversaturated substrate allows anaerobic bacteria to grow, leading to a smelly and unhealthy environment. When this happens, the only solution is to completely replace the affected substrate. Josh's Frogs Substrate Barrier is a simple, inexpensive, and effective way to prevent this situation from happening.

Each piece of Josh's Frogs Substrate Barrier measures approximately 18 x 24 inches.

Holds back substrate

Reviewed on October 14, 2024.

This barrier holds back the substrate well. The only places I had soil fall into the drainage layer was where I shifted the barrier when adding substrate. I liked that it was slightly bigger than my terrarium so that I could fold the sides up to hold more soil. I put a slope in my terrain so that the back is higher than the front, folding it along the sides definitely made it easier to keep the soil on top. It also has a much softer texture than most retention barriers, many are made of a kind of wire mesh, so this makes it safer for your pets if they happen to burrow!
