Silkworms are larva of the moth Bombyx mori. Used for centuries to product silk, they also make an excellent, nutrient-dense staple or addition to your pet's diet, offering a unique set of benefits alongside popular choices like hornworms. While hornworms excel at quick hydration, silkworms act as a nutritional powerhouse packed with protein, healthy fats, and a naturally balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. They also contain serrapeptase, a natural enzyme that reduces inflammation and aids in calcium absorption. Because they are entirely soft-bodied, they pose virtually zero impaction risk and are incredibly easy to digest. Furthermore, their steady growth rate gives you a much wider feeding window, unlike hornworms which tend to outgrow smaller reptiles very quickly.

Though their specialized care and slower growth make them a bit more of an investment, silkworms are a true reptile superfood. A great way to look at it is treating silkworms like a high-quality daily multivitamin for core, everyday nutrition, and hornworms like a specialized hydration boost when your pet needs a quick pick-me-up.

Silkworms are great feeders for:

  • Bearded dragons
  • Chameleons
  • Leopard geckos
  • Pac-Man frogs
  • ...and many other insectivorous reptiles and amphibians!

How to Store: Silkworms are also easy to care for and long lived if kept appropriately. At room temperature, they will grow approximately 1/4 inch a week. At higher temps (we keep them at 80°F), they can grow up to 1/2 inch a week. We provide enough food in their deli containers to grow the silkworms to approximately 1.5 inches in length. Make sure the food does not dry out, or else the silkworms will not be able to consume it. A small spray of water can help keep humidity up, but do not allow silkworms to come in contact with standing water. Silkworms eat mulberry leaves or a prepared diet that is mulberry based. Periodically remove silkworm waste as it builds up in the container. Their waste looks like small, dark balls.

How to Feed: Silkworms can be tong or bowl fed, or allowed to wander in the habitat for a short time before they are eaten. These larva are rather clumsy, making bowl feeding very effective.

Excellent customer service!!

Like the check out process & the lay-out of your website. I have been ordering from Josh's frogs for 12 years. The BEST feeders on the market. My 2 beardies love the feeders. This is my first time purchasing silk worms. I look forward to the adventure. If I lived close to Josh's Frogs, I would work there. Thank you, Janet

Josh's Frogs is literally the only place I can order silkworms from and have all of them arrive alive. Very pleased, as these are my three leopard geckos' favorite worms! Also, they're so cute (the worms, that is) :3

Best Silkworms

My pets adore silkworms and these ones are a great find. They're a perfect price and always come packaged well with enough food to last.

Slow moving & easy to dust

I bought the small 25 ct and they arrived alive. They are slow moving and my newly juvenile leopard gecko love them. I got him when he was 4 months old and had only been giving him freeze dried mealworms & crickets to help him adapt. Then I heard about this website & wanted to experience a live feed. They were the perfect size and soft exoskeleton for easy dinner. Next time I'll get a bigger count because he finished them all in a week
