Defining Characteristics:
Name: Eublepharis fuscus is their scientific name. Common names include West Indian Leopard Gecko or Dark Leopard Gecko.
Recommended Enclosure Size & Setup: The minimum enclosure size for for a single adult or a pair should be 36x18x18 inches. Recommended substrate is a mix of bioactive soil, such as Josh's Frogs Tropical BioBedding, and sand (avoid loose sand for juveniles).
At least 3 hides should be provided in the enclosure: one on the warm side, one on the cool side, and a moist hide. Rocks, cork bark, and branches are great not only for décor, but also for enrichment.
Temperature (°F): In order to properly thermoregulate (adjust their body temperature between warmer and cooler areas), these geckos need a warmer basking area (88-92°) and a cooler space (75-80°). They'll benefit from nighttime temperature drops down to 70°F. Use a digital thermometer to monitor temps in your gecko's enclosure.
Use under-tank heaters or ceramic heat emitters to achieve the necessary temperature ranges, but do not use light-based heat at night as this can disrupt their sleep cycle and potentially even cause damage to their eyes.
Humidity: General humidity should be between 40 and 60%. Providing a moist hide that maintains around 70–80% humidity is beneficial for shedding support. Use a digital hygrometer to monitor humidity levels.
Size: Hatchlings measure about 2.5-3 inches, and adults reach 6–8 inches. At the time of sale, these geckos are at least 4 inches.
Age: The lifespan for West Indian leopard geckos is 10–20 years in captivity with proper care. This species reaches sexual maturity around 12-18 months. At the time of sale, these animals are about 2-3 months.
Feeding: These geckos are insectivores. Offer gut-loaded crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Waxworms and superworms can be offered occasionally as treats. All feeders should be dusted with a calcium & vitamin supplement.
Juvenile geckos should be fed daily, while adults should eat every 2–3 days.
Sexing: Males have pre-anal pores and hemipenal bulges, while females lack these or have very faint pores. Sexing is reliable by 6–8 months.
Due to their young age, these geckos are sold as unsexed animals.
Color/Pattern: These geckos generally have a dark brown, gray, or black base color with muted spotting or bands. They have less contrast than E. macularius, the common leopard gecko. At this time, there are no bright morphs in captivity yet.
Social Behavior: These are solitary creatures and should be housed alone. Males are highly territorial, and female cohabitation is risky and not recommended unless you're an experienced keeper.
Breeding: Their breeding season runs from late spring to summer. West Indian leopard geckos require a brumation period before breeding (60–65°F).
Females lay 1–2 eggs per clutch, and the incubation period is 80–90 days, depending on temperature.
Natural Range: India and Pakistan, primarily in dry forests, rocky scrubland, and semi-arid regions.
History in the Hobby: West Indian leopard geckos are much rarer than E. macularius, and are still relatively new and uncommon in captivity.
This species is gaining interest among specialist breeders. Their rarity in the hobby has led to most specimens being wild-caught in the past, but captive-breeding is becoming more common. Josh's Frogs is excited to offer healthy captive-bred animals!
