About This Product

Josh's Frogs Melanogaster Fruit Fly Media is the best in the industry! Since 2004 we've produced over 80 TONS of fruit fly media! Each 1.5 lb. bag contains 5+ cups of fruit fly media. A bag of Josh's Frogs Melanogaster Fruit Fly Media makes 15 - 1/3 cup cultures or 10 - 1/2 cup cultures.

Retains Moisture

The #1 killer of fruit fly cultures is low humidity. Therefore, Josh's Frogs Fruit Fly Media uses powdered potatoes rather than potato flakes. This not only allows for a more thorough mix of ingredients, but it also allows the media to hold more water. This keeps the media from drying out and prematurely killing the culture.

Great Smell

Josh's Frogs Fruit Fly Media contains two natural anti-bacterial/anti-fungal ingredients. This eliminates the nasty smell of a bacteria/fungi infected culture. Many customers compare the smell of our cultures to freshly baked bread.

High Yields

Bacteria, fungus, and molds compete for nutrients with the fruit flies. Josh's Frogs Fruit Fly Media fights these invaders so your fruit fly cultures produce not only more fruit flies, but healthier fruit flies. We have the best producing fruit fly media on the market, and have been constantly perfecting it since 2004. We approach fruit fly culturing from a scientific standpoint, and produce over 1,500 32 oz. fruit fly cultures a week.

Packed with Vitamins and Color Enhancers

We believe that healthy fruit flies lead to healthy herps. Therefore, Josh's Frogs Fruit Fly media is full of vitamins and color enhancers from natural sources.

Need more reasons to give it a try? Here are the Top 10 Reasons You Should Try Our Fruit Fly Media!

Directions:

  1. Mix contents of bag thoroughly
  2. Pour ¾ cup of boiling RO water/bottled water over ½ cup of media (don't stir, just let it soak in! It may take a couple of days to absorb fully)
  3. Add a handful of excelsior to the cup
  4. Cover the cup and wait for it to cool
  5. Add 25-50 flies

Cultures should be kept below 85°F and will start producing flies in 12-14 days. If the cultures seem to be drying out (or molding), spray with RO water and use more water when making cultures. Josh’s Frogs recommends keeping the cultures in a plastic drawer system to prevent them from drying out.

This media contains a mold inhibitor.

Pro Tip: It's best to store media in the freezer so it stays as dry as possible. If the mold inhibitor within our recipe is exposed to moisture before a culture is made, it can deactivate the ingredient.

Melanogaster media can be used to culture hydei fruit flies, but keep in mind that melanogaster media contains less protein (perfect for these smaller flies). It's highly recommended to culture flies on their own media, as hydei cultured on melanogaster media for multiple generations can result in smaller flies.

Hydei media should not be used to culture melanogaster flies, as they have a difficult time breaking down the higher protein content in our hydei media.

Perfect for culturing fruit flies!!!!

Reviewed on January 12, 2025.

I have made many, many fruit fly cuttures and this is the media that I use. I have found that I have to add extra water because the media is too dry when I mix according to the directions. If the culture is left too dry, it will mold fast. This makes set up for culturing fruit flies a breeze! I would recommend this product.

bludsik

a bit dusty but works great for the flies

the media is very powdery and will easily get all into the air if you arent careful but it doesnt smell bad and the flies love it :)
