Fittonia verschaffeltii 'Red'- Nerve Plant is a member of the Acanthaceae family of plants and can be found in South America, mainly Peru. It has earned many common names such as Nerve Plant, but it is also referred to the Mosaic Plant due to the unique leaf pattern. The leaves are heavily veined with pink, which almost looks like a pink netting over green leaves. There are many types of 'Red' Fittonia's and the variety available can range from heavily veined to lightly veined. Some have ruffled edges on their leaves and some have smooth. Fittonias generally stay on the shorter side but can reach 6-12" tall when not pruned back.

Fittonia verschaffeltii 'Red' prefers slightly moist soil and high humidity (above 55%). It can grow in bright, indirect light but not direct light. Place in a warm spot and avoid areas with cold drafts or the plant may 'faint' or droop.

Container Gardens/Terrariums/Houseplant:

Fittonia verschaffeltii 'Red' does well in a container garden or terrarium due to its love of humidity. As a houseplant, place a tray of pebbles with water under the pot to keep humidity higher around the plant. Fittonia verschaffeltii 'Red' will also do well in a hanging basket.

This plant will do well in the tropical, humid environment of a vivarium. Plant in foreground or background as this plant can be easily trimmed and pruned back without adverse effects if done correctly. Place plant in an area that is not too soggy or it may rot. It’s an excellent candidate for most other animal terrariums, with plenty of foliage to allow privacy.

As good practice, Josh's Frogs recommends washing all plants thoroughly removing as much soil as possible with dechlorinated water before placing them in their final home.
