About This Product

This is a “Grower's Choice” plant, which means our Plant Team will choose one Sarracenia species that's available. Plants may differ in color and appearance from the plant pictured.

Scientific Name: Sarracenia spp.

Common Name(s): Pitcher plants, trumpet pitchers, or trumpet leaf

Defining Characteristics:

  • Highly modified, hollow, tubular leaves that function as pitfall traps for insects
  • Pitchers use nectar, vibrant color patterns, and often a sweet scent to lure insects to the slippery, waxy, and often downward-haired inner surface of the tube
  • Early spring brings large, usually solitary, nodding flowers on long stalks, which often appear before new pitchers
  • In the winter, many species go dormant, with some producing non-carnivorous, flat leaves called phyllodia to maximize photosynthesis in lower light

Recommended Pot Size: Small - Medium

Josh’s Frogs offers a wide variety of supplies for all of your indoor gardening needs.

Temperature Requirement (°F): 55-95°

Humidity: 50% to 70%

Watering Frequency: Maintain consistently wet, bog-like conditions during the growing season (spring–autumn) using only mineral-free water (rainwater, distilled, or reverse osmosis). Place pots in a tray with 0.5–1 inch of water to keep the soil constantly saturated. Reduce watering during winter dormancy, keeping the soil merely damp, not submerged, to prevent rot.

Lighting: Full Sun or Bright Light, if using artificial lights, ensure they are strong enough, as standard household lighting is insufficient.

Soil Type: Nutrient-poor and airy mix with a neutral to slightly acidic pH, like Josh's Frogs Carnivorous Plant Soil.

Growth Rate: Moderate

Height at Maturity: At maturity a Sarracenia will fill a 4 inch or larger pot, have multiple growth points, and full-sized pitchers.

Origin: Eastern Seaboard of the US, from Texas to Florida, and north to Canada.

Regional Locality: native to the wetlands, bogs, and swamps of North America

USDA Hardiness Zone: 6-8

Suggested Vivarium/ Animal Terrarium Use: Josh's Frogs does not recommend keeping carnivorous plants in vivariums with live animals, as the inhabitants will often disturb or damage the plants.

Care Notes: Sarracenia need consistently wet, bog-like conditions during the growing season (spring–autumn) using only mineral-free water (rainwater, distilled, or reverse osmosis). Place pots in a tray with 1–2 cm (0.5–1 inch) of water to keep the soil constantly saturated. Reduce watering during winter dormancy, keeping the soil merely damp, not submerged, to prevent rot. They should be planted in a nutrient-poor and airy mix with a neutral to slightly acidic pH.

Shipping Notes: Generous LIVE ARRIVAL GUARANTEE offered.

As good practice, Josh's Frogs recommends washing all plants thoroughly, removing as much soil as possible with dechlorinated water before placing them in their final home. Live plants may vary in color, size, and appearance.

ALL PLANTS ARE SHIPPED IN POTS WITH SOIL OR OTHER MEDIA UNLESS IT IS DEEMED NECESSARY TO SHIP BARE ROOT.

Standard pot sizes for Josh's Frogs plants typically range from 1.25-3.5 inches.
