Defining Characteristics:

  • Members of this species are known to regularly reach an 11 inch diagonal leg span!
  • Excellent display species that quite often sits out in the open
  • Very hardy species able to withstand temperature and humidity fluctuations
  • Known to be among the more docile species
  • Makes an absolutely lovely addition to anyone's pets

Name: Lasiodora parahybana is most commonly known as the Brazilian Salmon Pink Birdeater. The genus name Lasiodora has Greek roots meaning "shaggy" and "hide (skin)", and it's definitely well-earned as the genus is full of some of the fuzziest! The species name, parahybana likely comes from the fact that it was initially discovered in Paraiba.

Recommended Enclosure Size & Setup: The footprint (length and width) of the enclosure should both be at minimum three to four times the spider's diagonal leg span. There should be no more than two times the diagonal leg span of the spider for head space, as anything higher risks injury to your spider should it climb and fall.

ABG mixcoco cradle, or Dig-It are good substrate options, but our Pet Bug Team prefers ABG all the way! Caging should be tall enough to accommodate at least 2-3 inches of substrate for babies, with adults preferring closer to 5 inches for burrowing.

Temperature (°F):  72-80° with the natural range averaging 77°. Temperatures above 90 or consistently below 65° should be avoided due to risk of long-term health issues or death.

A reliable thermometer is strongly recommended.

Humidity: 65%-75%, easily achieved by overflowing the water dish and allowing that section of substrate to dry out most of the way before doing so again.

A reliable hygrometer is strongly recommended to monitor humidity within the enclosure.

Size: These L. parahybana slings are at least at a 1 inch diagonal leg span at time of sale. They average 8-11 inches as adults, with males being much larger, but females being much heavier-bodied.

Age: All of the L. parahybana slings listed are at least 3 months old. Females average a lifespan of 15 years, while males can be expected to last 3-5 years.

Feeding: These spiders are currently eating two to three 1/4 inch crickets, once a week. There are a variety of appropriate prey items that you can offer, such as roacheswaxwormsblack soldier fly larvaehornworms, and silkworms. Consider feeding your prey items with our gutload formula to give your pet well-rounded nutrition.

We recommend that the prey items not be much longer than the tarantula's “head” is wide. Larvae are an exception—our larvae are harmless. Since they are very high in fat, they're not the best staple diet, however they make a great weight gain supplement.

Remove uneaten prey items after 24 hours, these may stress your animal out or endanger the spider during molting. Never attempt to feed a freshly molted tarantula less than a week after their molt to prevent injury to the spider. Depending on its age, the hardening process could take anywhere from 48 hours all the way up to a week.

Sexing: Due to age, L. parahybana spiderlings sold by Josh's Frogs are sold as unsexed. Specimens of 2.5-3 inch diagonal leg span will be able to start being accurately sexed. The most accurate method is always molt sexing, the molt of a female tarantula of appropriate size will have spermatheca and a uterus externus in between the top two sets of book lungs that will appear as a "flap" that will catch and open if a pin is gently run down this section of the old exoskeleton. Males will have a much more plain slit that will not budge with attempts to manipulate it.

Color: Spiderlings are light brown, as adults they grow to be a wonderful grayish brown with reddish setae on the abdomen.

Social Behavior: L. Parahybana are by no means social creatures and any attempts to cohabitate will likely result in cannibalism.

Natural Range: They come from Brazil in the Atlantic Forest region. They are particularly well known around Campina Grande.
