About This Product

Scientific Name: Dionaea muscipula 'Cupped Trap'

Common Name(s): Cupped Trap Venus Flytrap

Defining Characteristics:

  • A distinct Venus flytrap cultivar known for its unique, partially fused leaf lobes that form a rounded, cup-like shape at the end of the petiole
  • While the structure is mutated, the traps are typically still functional and capable of catching insects
  • Leaves often feature a thickened or spoon-shaped petiole (leaf stalk) leading up to the cupped trap
  • Traps generally show a bright green to yellowish exterior with a red interior, similar to the typical species
  • Requires a 3–5 month rest period (dormancy) with cooler temperatures. During winter, reduce humidity and water, keeping the plant in cooler, roughly 32-55°F conditions.

Recommended Pot Size: Small - Medium

Josh’s Frogs offers a wide variety of supplies for all of your indoor gardening needs.

Temperature Requirement (°F): requires a warm growing season (65–85°F) and a cold, dormant period (32–55°F)

Humidity: Above 50%

Watering Frequency: Water with only distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water. Use the tray method, where the pot sits in a saucer of water, and keep the substrate consistently moist. In winter, reduce the water level, keeping the soil damp but not sitting in as much standing water.

Lighting: 14-16 hours per day during the growing season; full, direct sun (6-12+ hours). 10-12 hours in dormancy.

Soil Type: Nutrient-poor, acidic, and well-draining soil like Josh’s Frogs Carnivorous Plant Soil

Growth Rate: Moderate

Size at Maturity: Mature diameter of 2–5 inches

Origin: Dionaea muscipula 'Cupped Trap' is a registered cultivar (2004) originating as a tissue culture mutation identified in 1998 at the Agri-Starts III laboratory in Florida. Like all wild Venus flytraps, it originates from the nutrient-poor, acidic bogs and wet savannas of the coastal plains within a 100-mile radius of Wilmington, North Carolina.

Regional Locality: Wet pine savannas, pocosins, and boggy, swampy areas.

USDA Hardiness Zone: 5-9

Suggested Vivarium/ Animal Terrarium Use:

Care Notes: Water with only distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water. Use the tray method, where the pot sits in a saucer of water, and keep the substrate consistently moist. In winter, reduce the water level, keeping the soil damp but not sitting in as much standing water. This plant requires a 3–5 month rest period with cooler temperature. During winter, reduce humidity and water, keeping the plant in cooler, roughly 32-55°F conditions.

Each trap only opens and closes a few times before it will die off and grow a new one.  For this reason, it is important to not “false trigger” the traps and make them shut for no reason, as it will only stress out the plant with no benefit. It is also important to never fertilize a Venus flytrap, as that would be fatal to the plant. This plant is not suggested for animal terrariums.

Shipping Notes: Generous LIVE ARRIVAL GUARANTEE offered.
