Name: These frogs are most commonly called ‘Amazon Milk Frogs‘ presently, due to the milky white secretions that are released from the frog’s back when threatened (this rarely occurs with captive-bred animals). In the past, Amazon Milk Frogs have also been called Amazon Cave Frogs, and Gold Mission Frogs, due to black markings on their eyes that resemble crucifixes. The Amazon Milk Frog's scientific name is Trachycephalus resinifictrix.

Amazon milk frogs are a tropical tree cavity breeding species. As such, their needs may differ from that of other tree frogs. To begin, they appear to prefer still water, so if raising them in the sump systems make sure that the in-flow valve is shut off completely. Daily spot cleaning will be needed to remove old food and excess waste, but water changes/refills should be kept to twice a week if possible.

Water conditions should be measured daily to ensure that ammonia is not allowed to build up to dangerous levels. A sponge filter can be used to help with this. Also, be sure to provide several Indian almond leaves in the tanks, as they seem to prefer tannic water. Water temperatures should be maintained between 80 and 85°F. An aquarium heater should be used in every tank. Providing tadpoles with structure to hide in is also advisable. Fake aquarium plants can be used to provide cover. Lastly, a small piece of cuttlefish bone should be offered to provide a source of calcium.

From an early age, milk frog tadpoles are voracious eaters. They will eat most food items offered, and should be fed Josh's Frogs Tree Frog & Toad Tadpole Food twice a day, and offered a variety of supplements each day as well. Boiled spinach seems a particular favorite, but they will also take bloodworms and Repashy Soilent Green. Due to the amount of food that we provide them it is important to be vigilant regarding water quality, as food left to spoil too long will produce excess nitrogen.

When tadpoles reach a month and a half of age, legs will begin to develop. At this stage it may be necessary to increase water changes/refills to three times per week. When a tadpole develops all four limbs, catch it and place it in a separate aquarium with one to two inches of water (same water it came out of if possible), artificial plants, and a well fitted lid. As it finishes its metamorphosis the froglet will climb out of the water, either onto the plants or up the side of the tank. At this point the froglet can be moved into a 10 gallon tank.
