What Dart Frog is Right for Me?

Have you been thinking of bringing a small slice of South America into you home lately? Dart frogs are one of the best ways to set up a mini jungle paradise in your living space! These wonderful frogs come in all colors, shapes, sizes, and even have their own personalities. It can be fairly intimidating when trying to find the right dart frog for you… but by the end of this article you will be one step closer! Below are the most common types of dart frogs we suggest for beginners. In most cases this is due to their ease of care and boldness. So lets 'hop' right in!

Dendrobates tinctorius ‘Azureus’

These beautiful blue frogs are the stars of the dart frog world! This is in part because of their stunning color, but also because their care is on the easy end. They are native to a very limited range in the Sipaliwini Savanna, located in southern Suriname. Josh's Frogs recommends keeping these wonders in a 20H or 18x18x18 Vivarium for 1-3 frogs.

Phyllobates terribilis ‘Orange’

Fun fact! Phyllobates are one of the most toxic dart frogs in the wild, but fear not! Dart frogs are only toxic because of what they eat in the wild and do not carry the same toxic qualities in captivity. These frogs are known for their potent beauty and personality. Phyllobates terribilis can be housed in groups, which makes them great for larger vivariums where a caretaker may want to have many frogs.  They come from the rain forests of the pacific coast of Colombia and have a wonderfully loud call, so if you are looking for a dart frog that can sing, this is the frog for you!  [button-green url="https://new.joshsfrogs.com/p/phyllobates-terribilis-orange" target="_self" position="center"]Read more about the Terribillis[/button-green]

Dendrobates tinctorius ‘Patricia’

Another tinctorius, the Patricia's are great frogs! Their grey blue legs mixed with their striking yellow and black body make them a delightfully colorful frog to have. They are similar in care to the Azureus and have great character. They are known for being bold and easy to care for. Patricia are native to Suriname, just like the Azureus dart frog. Josh's Frogs recommends keeping these wonders in a 20H or 18x18x18 Vivarium for 1-3 frogs.  [button-green url="https://new.joshsfrogs.com/p/dendrobates-tinctorius-patricia" target="_self" position="center"]Read more about the Patricia[/button-green]

Dendrobates auratus 'Turquoise & Bronze’

If you're looking for more variation in color, take a look at the Dendrobates auratus ""Turquoise & Bronze'. Many people like to begin with these beauties because they can have plenty of variability in their coloration and pattern, making them easy to tell apart in a vivarium. These wonderful frogs are native to Panama. Josh's Frogs recommends a 20H or 18x18x18 Vivarium for 1-3 frogs.
