Here in the Josh’s Frogs Horticulture Department, we spend a lot of time thinking about the delicate balance between lush, beautiful plant life and the safety of your vivarium. If you’ve ever ordered our live sheet moss or mood moss, you know how transformative a vibrant carpet of green can be for a bioactive enclosure.

I want to take a moment to pull back the curtain on exactly how we clean and prepare our live moss, why we do it this way, and how we navigate the challenges of providing a product that is both high-quality and safe for your pets.

Sourcing and the Hitchhiker Challenge

Our process begins long before the moss reaches our facility. We work strictly with select suppliers chosen specifically for the safety and quality of their crops. Our sheet and mood mosses are sustainably farmed outdoors in the naturally damp weather of the Appalachian Mountain range.

To provide the best growing conditions, our suppliers cultivate this moss on a curated substrate mix that includes natural wood. It creates a gorgeous, thriving plant—but unfortunately, a perfect environment for growing moss is also a perfect environment for native insects and wildlife.

Some of the most prominent hitchhikers we encounter are ants, which are notoriously difficult to deal with safely. Naturally, we have heavily researched and tested numerous hitchhiker eradication options to try and streamline our process. However, we have yet to find a commercial treatment that yields the high-quality live moss our customers love while remaining safe to use alongside amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates.

Here is what we have found when testing standard eradication methods:

• Chemicals & Pesticides: These have a dangerous tendency to accumulate within the dense cellular structure of the moss during treatment, making it incredibly difficult to guarantee the safety of your pets once introduced to a vivarium.
• Knockdown Treatments (Organic & Synthetic): These are designed to work on contact, “knocking down” and killing pests immediately with little or no residual effects. While somewhat effective on soft-bodied pests, these treatments generally fail against resilient insects like ants. Furthermore, they often burn or damage the moss itself during the application process.
• Heat Treatments: These effectively kill pests, but also reliably kill the live moss.

Our Solution: The Pounding Table

Because chemical and thermal options may compromise both pet safety and plant health, we continuously come back to manual removal as the absolute safest option for our live moss.

Currently, our team utilizes a specialized "pounding table" with a surface of stiff wire mesh. As we unpack the raw moss from our suppliers, we manually shake and pound each individual piece against the mesh. This kinetic action knocks off hitchhikers, excess wood, and other organic debris, which fall safely into collection bins below.

During this process, we meticulously inspect the moss for any remaining signs of pests, manually picking out any debris or hitchhikers that the table missed. It's a very deliberate balancing act: our goal is to be as thorough as humanly possible, while also leaving the structural integrity of each moss piece intact. Only once we are satisfied that a piece is as clean as possible does it move to the next steps.

Transparency and Your Options

As you can imagine, this manual process is incredibly tedious. While we take our time and carefully work through each piece of moss by hand, there are simply times when tiny hitchhikers are buried deep inside a particularly dense or thick piece of mood or sheet moss, and we miss them. We do our very best, but because this is a natural product sustainably grown in the great outdoors, inevitably, some hitchhikers can slip past us. We want to be entirely open and transparent about that possibility.

If the absolute guarantee of a pest-free environment is your top priority, we highly recommend our dried moss options.

The Benefits of Dried Moss:

The Drawbacks of Dried Moss:

• It arrives dormant/dead, meaning it does not provide the instant, lush green aesthetic of live moss.
• Actual regrowth is never guaranteed.
